Hepatitis

Hepatitis is a leading cause of liver cancer – and a growing global killer. It is also preventable, treatable and in the case of Hepatitis C, curable. Join us in our mission to scale up access to diagnosis and treatment services.

What is our goal?

Preventing 9.5 million new infections

The WHO Foundation is supporting WHO to raise funding for a 5-year program to scale up access to diagnosis and treatment services for Hepatitis B and C in seven countries: Cambodia, Cameroon, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Africa, Uganda, and Vietnam

When fully implemented the program aims to:

  • Prevent 9.5 million new infections.
  • Avert 2.1 million cases of liver cancer.

The long-term goal by 2050 is to prevent 53 million infections, 15 million cancer cases, and save 23 million lives.

Hepatitis Facts

Can It Be Prevented?

Hepatitis B is preventable with a vaccine—at any age, including from birth.

  • If a pregnant woman is vaccinated, it helps protect the baby.
  • Babies still need their own vaccinations after birth.

There is no vaccine for Hepatitis C.

Can It Be Treated?

Hepatitis C is curable. A 12-week course of antiviral medicine can clear the virus completely.

Hepatitis B is not curable, but daily medication (like Tenofovir or Entecavir) can greatly reduce your risk of liver cancer and cirrhosis

Diagnosis and Treatment

The WHO recently pre-qualified the first self-test for Hepatitis C.

New, low-cost medicines (called direct-acting antivirals, or DAAs) can treat all types of Hep C and are more accessible globally.
